Stonegarthside Hall stands high above the banks of the River Liddel in the ancient Forest of Nichol, just one mile from the Scottish border. Set within its own grounds the Hall commands extensive views. Described as 'arguably the most remote country house in England,' Stonegarthside Hall was built in 1682 by Henry Forster.

The Hall retains many of its original features such as the stone flags, substantial beamed ceilings and the impressive covered central courtyard. The main entrance to the Hall is reached through this courtyard. To the left of the entrance lies the billiards room with full sized billiards table and a games chest. The sitting room is accessed from here and benefits from charming tartan fittings and a large stone fireplace with wood-burning stove. The dining room, with a second wood-burning stove, has fine oak furniture and traditional bench seating. The dining room leads to the large and well equipped farmhouse style kitchen with its own breakfasting table. A shower room and utility/boot room flank the main stairway.

The first floor is accessed either from the impressive central stone stairway that serves the whole house or from the small service stair by the kitchen. The spacious accommodation on the first floor comprises two double bedrooms, two twin-bedded rooms and one single bedroom. The two double bedrooms on this floor boast fine carved beds, one a four-poster and one a 'fertility' bed. There are two bathrooms of which one is en-suite. The stone stair continues to the second floor where there are three bedrooms, one double, one twin and one single plus an additional bathroom. On this floor the Hall has a second games room containing a full sized table tennis table.

The Forsters were a prominent family in the region. It is thought that Henry had a Scottish wife since he was at one time prosecuted for having his children baptised by a fanatical field preacher in Scotland.

Despite being firmly planted on English soil, Stonegarthside is thoroughly Scottish in its architectural language and character, with its crow stepped gables, hewn stone, and decorated quoins or corner stones. Two flanking parallel wings are linked by a cross wall, creating a covered central courtyard. The cross wall is topped by a battlemented parapet.
